Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's spokesperson Yulia Mendel says over ten countries have already backed an international platform designed to facilitate the end of the Russian occupation of Crimea.

"The creation of the Crimean Platform has already been welcomed by such countries as Turkey, Lithuania, Great Britain and many others – there are over a dozen [countries]," she told the State TV Channel Dom.

Mendel said several countries had agreed in principle to participate in the Crimean Platform.

"For some reason, Crimea was forgotten under the previous government, and the issue of getting the occupied peninsula back was not mentioned on any platform. Now President Zelensky is talking with leaders of many countries about a new decision – about the Crimean Platform," she added.

The spokesperson also explained that the format of organisation of the first summit of the international Crimean Platform scheduled for August 23 is still being discussed due to the pandemic situation.

“The first Crimean Platform summit is scheduled for August 23, the day before the Independence Day. Indeed, the pandemic has put many events on hold, and we are currently discussing in what format the summit will be organised. We gather a huge coalition because we understand that our common home is impossible without Crimea,” Mendel said.

She stressed that President Volodymyr Zelensky talked to the leaders of many countries about the Crimean Platform.

Crimean Platform

The Crimean Platform is a new consultative and coordination format initiated by Ukraine to improve the international response to the occupation of Crimea and growing security challenges.

The Platform aims to increase international pressure on Russia, prevent further human rights violations, protect victims of the occupation regime, and achieve the goal of de-occupation of Crimea and its return to Ukraine.

The Crimean Platform will operate at several levels: The first is the highest political level, which will be joined by foreign heads of state and government. The second is the level of heads of foreign policy departments and defence ministers; the third is the inter-parliamentary level; the fourth is the level of non-governmental experts.

The activities of the Crimean Platform will be officially launched at the inaugural summit which is planned to be held in Kyiv on August 23, 2021.
