German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has criticized his predecessor Angela Merkel for her misguided economic policies towards Russia. At the same time, he stressed that, in his opinion, the attempt to reach an agreement with another aggressor, who is waging wars on the European continent, in a peaceful way "cannot be wrong". He said this in an interview with Die Welt.

"An attempt at reconciliation can never be a mistake, just as an attempt to get along peacefully. I see myself next to my predecessor… But it was a mistake in German economic policy that we concentrated too much of our energy supply in Russia without building the necessary infrastructure so that we could change course quickly if the worst happened”, Scholz said.

He also spoke on Angela Merkel's decision to deny Ukraine membership in 2008.

"Any country wishing to join the Alliance must meet the criteria for joining NATO. Ukraine's accession to NATO was not on the agenda. Everyone knew about it, in particular the president of Russia, by the way. It is all the more absurd that Putin justified his attack on Ukraine by saying that at some point Ukraine may suddenly find itself there”, the German chancellor said.

It will be recalled that on June 1, former German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke in support of Ukraine for the first time in a long time.
