The Russian Defense Ministry announced the construction of a new test site in occupied Crimea. This is an alarming information because of several aspects. This was stated by the co-director of foreign policy and international security programs of the Razumkov Center, military expert Oleksiy Melnyk in a comment to QIRIM.News.
According to him, first of all, this is another step towards the militarization of Crimea. The expert noted that these are serious environmental threats for Crimea. After all, nature reserves are closed even for visitors, however, military exercises are underway.
“On the one hand, tourists are forbidden to visit nature reserves because it is considered to be a threat for the environment. And on the other hand, everything is being bombed and thereby destroyed by their heavy machinery. And the construction of another test site in Crimea is an additional increase in personnel and an infrastructure development. That is, these are really threatening steps towards further militarization of Crimea,” Melnyk stressed.
He also noted that the Crimean direction is one of the areas where the threat of further invasion comes from. And for Russia, the problem of gaining access to drinking water remains relevant.
"If we consider the worst-case scenarios, meaning the attack from several directions, indeed, Crimea remains one of the most threatening areas. The nature of the exercises is not defensive, it is a workout training of an attack scenario," said the military expert.
