The European Commission has officially recommended granting Ukraine candidate status for accession to the European Union. This was announced by EC President Ursula von der Leyen at a briefing in Brussels, according to “Yevropeyska Pravda” ("European Truth").

"The Commission recommends that the Council give Ukraine a European perspective and grant candidate status. Sure, with the understanding that the country will implement a set of further important reforms", said von der Leyen.

A statement from the European Commission said that Ukraine had generally made progress in achieving the stability of institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and respect for and protection of minorities.

It is also noted that Ukraine has continued good macroeconomic results, showing worthy attention to macroeconomic and financial stability, in need of continued ambitious structural economic reforms.

"We know that Ukrainians are ready for everything for the European perspective. We want them to live the European dream with us”, the President added.

A formal status decision for Ukraine is due to be made at a summit of EU leaders on June 23.
