The Danish
government is ready to support granting Ukraine candidate status if the
European Commission gives a positive recommendation.
This was stated by Foreign Minister Eppe Kofod, “Yevropeyska Pravda” ("European Truth") reports.
"If the European Commission decides that Ukraine is ready to acquire candidate status, this is also something we can support", Kofod said.
He made the
statement on Thursday after the leaders of France, Germany, and Italy supported
granting candidate status to Ukraine, during their visit to Kyiv.
Prime
Minister Matte Frederiksen must get a seat in parliament before she
travels to Brussels for an EU summit to support the decision.
Kofod added that if a country becomes a candidate, it does not mean that the path to membership is short or easy.
"It is also important to say that there is a long way to go. This applies to all candidates, they must meet the Copenhagen criteria", Kofod said.
