German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has accused Vladimir Putin of murder, lies, and cynical abuse of history. He stated this at the opening of the congress of the Association of German Trade Unions, Deutsche Welle reports.

According to the president, by attacking Ukraine, Putin "is finally destroying the foundations of the European world order”. Steinmeier, who had previously been very loyal to Russia, called the invasion of Ukraine "an attack on the idea of liberal democracy and the values, on which it is based: freedom, equality, respect for human rights and human dignity".

The president also accused Putin, who talks about fascism and denazification, of lying.

"This is a treacherous and cynical distortion of history," he said. – “Equating the struggle against National Socialism with its brutal, illegal, aggressive war against Ukraine is also a treacherous and cynical insult to history.”

In support of his remarks, Steinmeier said that under the pretext of denazification, the Russian president was killing even Holocaust survivors.

In turn, the German politician admitted that he was wrong, not believing that Putin "in his imperial madness" is ready to lead his own country to political, economic, and moral destruction.
