Anvar Kurmanakayev and Edige Bekmurzayev, the head of the public organization "Nogai-El" and an activist of the Nogai political movement, appealed to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, with a request to recognize the Astrakhan-Nogai state as occupied by Russia since July 2, 1554.
In the appeal, it is emphasized that the Nogai people turned from a multi-million people into a small nation, which began to be exterminated under Catherine II, when 500 thousand Nogai people were killed by the Russian general Suvorov.
The authors of the statement also recalled that under the USSR, a famine was organized against the Nogai people, as a result of which half the population of the Nogai lands died, and today Russia kills Nogai activists without trial and investigation because they want to be free and build their own free state.
"As a small nation, today we are losing our culture, history, and language. With your recognition of the genocide of the Nogai people and our state as occupied, you, as the president of Ukraine, feel all the aggression and atrocities committed by the Russian Empire against the people of Ukraine. Give us a chance to be free and build a free, independent, democratic state under the name of the Nogai Republic of Astrakhan," said the activists of the national movement.
The Nogai people are Turkic people in the North Caucasus, formed in the Nogai Horde, to whose population the name "Nogai" is applied. 104,000 Nogais live in Russia in the Stavropol region, Dagestan (national district), Karachay-Cherkessia (Nogai district created in 2005), and other regions.
