The Russian occupiers are using torture against the Spanish volunteer Mariano García Calatayud, also known as Mario, who is illegally detained in the Simferopol pre-trial detention center.

Dmytro Lubinets, the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, reported this in Telegram.

"According to the former cellmate of the Spanish volunteer, 75-year-old Mario is being tortured by Russian security forces in the pre-trial detention center: he has bruises from blows on his legs, he has lost part of his teeth and was brutally treated by prison guards. His body is covered with scars," Lubinets wrote.

Neither the Spanish consul, who was not even informed about the detention of Mariano García Calatayud, nor the lawyer who has a warrant are allowed to see the volunteer.

Lubinets drew the attention of the world community to the flagrant violations of international humanitarian law by the Russian Federation.

"I demand the immediate release of the civilian subject of the Kingdom of Spain, Mariano García Calatayud, as well as all the civilian citizens of Ukraine who, in accordance with the Geneva Convention, should not be held on false charges in places of deprivation of liberty in the non-controlled territory of Ukraine or in the Russian Federation," the Ombudsman emphasized.

He emphasized that kidnappings, illegal arrests of civilians, deportation to Russia or its occupied territories, torture, and inhumane treatment during the Russian invasion are war crimes and crimes against humanity for national and international justice mechanisms.

"There are no borders for the aggressor country. Therefore, bringing the Russian Federation to justice is the goal of Ukraine and the duty of the entire democratic world!", said Lubinets.
