The US State Department has announced the introduction of visa restrictions against 25 representatives of the Belarusian authorities, including members of parliament, for persecuting the opposition and undermining democracy.
Ukrinform informs about this with reference to representatives of the State Department.
In particular, the statement directly accuses the Belarusian regime of persecuting the opposition.
"In response to these human rights violations, the State Department is announcing the imposition of visa restrictions against 25 individuals pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 8015 for their involvement in subverting democracy", according to the statement.
Visa sanctions have been imposed, in particular, against MPs for their role in passing a law on the death penalty for people convicted of alleged "attempted terrorism". The State Department emphasized that these statements are used to intimidate the opposition.
