According to media reports, high-ranking American military personnel believe that Ukraine will be able to return Crimea, occupied since 2014, under its control by military means, if it continues the counteroffensive at the current pace.

This is reported by the British The Telegraph, Bukva reports.

Such assessments from the American military came after the President of the russian federation, vladimir putin, for the first time recognized the failures of the Russian army on the battlefield, and the Armed Forces entered the Luhansk region, which was actually completely occupied by the russians back in the summer.

It is noted that earlier Western officials did not consider the option of returning the occupied peninsula by force, because they believed that Russia would fight for it with all its might. However, a senior US officer told The Telegraph that recent failures by the Russian military mean that the option of Ukraine retaking Crimea militarily is now entirely possible and can no longer be rejected.

The advance into Crimea would mean Ukraine would go further than the front line as of February 23 – the day before Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Russia occupied Crimea in 2014 and would likely take a ground attack on the critical strategic enclave as a major escalation.

"Obviously, Russia no longer has the ability or the willpower to defend key positions, and if the Ukrainians succeed in their goal of recapturing Kherson, there is a very real possibility that they will eventually be able to recapture Crimea," the American military said.
