Today, July 1, at the 5th extraordinary meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the element "Culture of making Ukrainian borshch" was added to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Immediate Protection.

This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine (MCIP).

In view of the threat, the MCIP appealed to the UNESCO Secretariat with a request to transfer the submitted nomination to the UNESCO List of Urgent Protection.

"Borshch is an element of social integration and cohesion, which serves to unite the people of Ukraine, regardless of age, gender or origin. In this sense, the element demonstrates the important role of intangible cultural heritage during armed conflicts and emergency situations", the ministry said in a statement.
